SCHOOL VISITS
Writing books for children means that it is very important to get together with children as often as I can, so I really enjoy doing school visits. Since my books are for ages 4-10, I am happy to do school visits with either KS1 or KS2.
These can take the form of reading from my books and discussing stories, characters etc. with a view to adding to their enjoyment of books and improving their own stories. I will also answer questions about how books are made, how a writer works etc. Sessions should last no longer than 30 minutes for KS1 and 45 minutes for KS2.
I can also offer workshops, during which I may ask children to write or draw, but since these take longer I prefer not to have more than one class of KS2 at any one time, unless by prior arrangement.
For insurance purposes it is important that the teachers remain with the children at all times.
I usually reckon on three sessions a day, but I can be flexible on this. I do, however, ask that you have a cheque ready on the day of the visit. I charge the standard rate recommended by the Society of Authors, though I can offer a discount for local schools.
Children often like to have a signed copy of a book by an author they have met, so I can bring copies with me to sell at a small discount. Please let parents know in advance if children need to bring money into school - I will be happy to supply the school with a list of prices before my visit.
